Synergies between Agriculture and Health Systems

While the need for integration is increasingly recognized among development implementers, the means of achieving it is not well defined. We try to fill this gap and generate tools for more effective planning, design, implementation, and evaluation of integrated programs with particular focus on nutrition. This research component documents best practices and lessons learned from the Millennium Villages Project and compares to other programs for successful agriculture-health integration. Activities and outputs include methods and tools to enhance program design, implementation and scale-up, as well as rigorous evaluation and documentation of lessons learned. An example of a tool developed is the waternut toolkit involving community health workers and agricultural extension workers to better address water quality, diarrhea disease, food production, and consumption simultaneously.
